Hotbuckle Productions present Tess of the d’Urbervilles. This production was recorded at Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury, Nov 21 2019.
Hotbuckle write original material and adapt classic novels, telling the tales with humour and emotion, making them accessible to everyone.
Tess, the daughter of a poor and dissipated villager, learns that she may be descended from the ancient family of D’Urberville. In her search for respectability her story assumes the proportions of a Greek tragedy when she meets two very different men!
With live music, multiple characterisation, humour and inventiveness, yet another English classic novel is brought wonderfully to life—Hotbuckle style!
Though now considered a major nineteenth-century novel and possibly Hardy’s fictional masterpiece, Tess of the D’Urbervilles received mixed reviews when it first appeared, in part because it challenged the sexual morals of late Victorian England. Set in Hardy’s Wessex, Tess is a moving story of hypocrisy and double standards that was often condemned as immoral and pessimistic.
